Awesome adult music courses that are affordable, fun and inspiring!
For each class you'll receive links to helpful online resources, videos, additional course materials and more. Weekly video and email recaps are sent out each week for adult classes, so even if you miss a class you'll be able to continue learning!
All classes listed are for both in-person and virtual participants.
We are following all recommended guidance for social distancing & masking, have HEPA filtration in the classroom, and require that in-person students be fully vaccinated. If you are not fully vaccinated and wish to enroll, please choose a virtual seat to enroll in class.

Piano & Music Theory Basics

Beginner Level
4 week course

This course is open to all musicians and skill levels, and no musical knowledge is required to participate.

Please note that adult classes are non-refundable.
With at least 2 weeks notice of cancelation prior to the start of a course, we will offer credit towards another course.
Piano & Music Theory Basics is a fun entry level four week long adult music course that is perfect for first time beginners or people with some music background looking to firm up their musical foundation.
In each 60 minute class you will work on developing piano technique, learning how to read music, and practicing playing songs in a variety of styles.
By the end of the four week course, you will understand a lot more about basic foundational music theory concepts and will be able to play simple piano pieces with confidence.

Some of the topics covered in this course:
Reading music - pitch and rhythm reading
Chords - Major and minor triads
Scales - the C major scale
Piano Pieces - Music used for this course will consist of a variety of pieces from different styles and eras
Song Form - learning to recognize the different sections of a song, and how to understand basic song form

Sheet music and instructional materials will be provided by the instructor each week.

Understanding Chords - Triads and 7th Chords

Beginner/Intermediate Level

This course is open to all musicians and skill levels, but is recommended for beginner/intermediate level musicians.

With at least 2 weeks notice of cancelation prior to the start of a course, we will offer credit towards another course.
This 4 week adult beginner-intermediate level course teaches students how to play major and minor triads, and how to understand and play all types of 6th and 7th chords. This is the perfect course for musicians looking to develop a firm harmonic foundation with all basic chord types. After taking this course, you will be able to play almost any type of chord!
The course uses lots of fun songs for students to learn and practice at home, and materials are provided in class each week
Some of the topics included are:
Triads - focusing mainly on learning Major and Minor triads, and also exploring Diminished, Augmented, and Suspended triads.
6th chords - Major and Minor 6th chords,
7th chords - Major, Minor, and Dominant 7th chords
Extensions & Alterations - more advanced types of 6th and 7th chords
All students will receive a digital package of sheet music, links to music education resources, and other materials.

Creating Easy Solo Piano Arrangements For Any Song

Advanced Beginner / Intermediate Level Course
Tuesdays May 9, 16, 23, 30 @ 7pm.
In-person course at Keylab. Classes are 60 minutes long.
This course demystifies basic arranging concepts, and teaches students how to play full, professional-sounding arrangements for any song using "lead sheets" (sheet music using only the melody and chord symbols).
Students will learn how to use chord inversions (the re-ordering of the notes in a chord) to play chords & melody in the right hand, and will learn simple and effective left-hand accompaniment techniques.
When practiced separately and then combined after mastering, these two separate but related concepts

In this 4 week adult music class you will be given a guided tour of some amazing songs written by rock icon David Bowie. Each week your instructor will give you an overview of a new Bowie classic, section by section, and you'll receive basic sheet music for each song, along with links to purchase optional digital sheet music with full piano arrangements.
You'll also be guided week to week on what to focus on the get the most out of your practice sessions. Even if you can't learn an entire song in one week, you'll learn a lot about Bowie's songwriting and rock chord progressions, and will have all the tools you'll need to continue working on each song at your own pace after the course is over.

Beginner Classes - For complete beginners, or people with some skills but in need of a refresher on basics

Advanced Beginner - For people who know the notes on the piano, can play at least a few major/minor chords, have some basic music reading skills. and can play one or two simple songs or short pieces.

Intermediate Classes - For people who know all major/minor chords, can understand basic beginner sheet music, and are comfortable playing in tempo confidently.

ARE YOU OFFERING IN PERSON ADULT MUSIC CLASSES AND LESSONS?

We will begin in person classes again in September 2021, and you can check the course description for details on whether the course is virtual or in person.
WHAT DO I NEED TO PARTICIPATE IN AN ADULT MUSIC CLASS?

For in person classes, you'll just need to show up on time, and bring any sheet music or other materials required for the course (you can see the individual courses for details).

For virtual lessons or classes you will need:
-
An instrument - For most of our classes piano will work best, but you can use any instrument unless the class is specifically geared towards a specific instrument.

A Zoom account and the standalone Zoom app will provide the best experience.

For lessons you'll need a camera and mic.

For classes, you don't need a camera or mic, but your ability to participate will be limited without them.

DO I HAVE TO KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT MUSIC TO TAKE AN ADULT MUSIC COURSE?

Most courses are open to all skill levels, including complete beginners, but some courses list recommended skill levels to help you get the most out of each course. Check the specific course you're interested in for details. Contact us if you're unsure if the class is appropriate for you!

Even if you don't know much about a subject, or feel that you're not at the recommended skill level the class, you'll have access to videos and course materials after the course is over, so you'll be able to use the course as a way to get started and work your way up quickly even if you aren't at the listed skill level of the course.

AM I GOING TO HAVE TO PLAY FOR OTHER PEOPLE IN THE CLASS?

We will ask students to try playing in class now and then, but one will be asked to perform or play anything for the group unless they are comfortable doing so.

WHO TEACHES KEYLAB'S ADULT MUSIC CLASSES?

Our teachers are located mostly in NYC, but we also offer virtual lessons with creative, intelligent, and experienced educators from all over the world.

HOW MUCH TIME SHOULD I SPEND PRACTICING EACH WEEK?

It is completely up to you how much time you spend practicing. Our courses are designed so that you can spend as much or as little time as you want and you will still be able to learn.

This being said, we do recommend that you try to review the materials as best possible each week so that you can get the most out of each class.
HOW MUCH DO ADULT MUSIC CLASSES COST?

Most of our classes are 4 week courses and cost around $150-200. See class details for specifics.

DO YOU OFFER REFUNDS FOR COURSES AND CLASSES?

We don't offer credits or refunds for missed or cancelled classes.

If you give us at least at least 2 weeks notice before the course starts, we'll offer credit for another course or private lessons.

Taking an adult music class can be a profoundly rewarding experience. Learning is the foundation of lifelong growth, and you're never too old to start!

WHAT IF I MISS MY ADULT MUSIC CLASS?

Each class will be filmed, edited and posted to our site for students to access online, so if you can't make a class, you can still go over the material and be ready for the next week's class.

I DON'T HAVE AN INSTRUMENT. CAN YOU HELP ME BUY ONE?

There is no failing with our classes, and you don't need talent or a PhD to learn to play piano or other instruments.

You won't be asked to perform, and you don't have to play anything to take our adult music classes.

You just have to WANT to learn, and be open to trying something new. Who knows? It might just change your life!
