Most materials are included in our adult music classes, and you'll receive links to helpful online resources, videos, and more. Weekly video and email recaps are sent out each week for adult classes, so even if you  miss a class you'll be able to continue learning!
Playing Piano

Piano & Music Theory Basics

 

Beginner Level

4 week course

$150

Thursdays 7:30pm March 4th - 25th & April 8th - 29th

This 4 week adult class is designed to teach basic piano and music theory skills. You will learn to play songs on your own, and to understand the foundational concepts and language of music. 

Some of the topics covered in this course:

Reading music - pitch and rhythm reading

Chords - basic triads

Scales - the major scale

Piano Pieces - Learn piano pieces by various composers such as Czerny, Burgmuller, Bach and more 

Song Form - learning to recognize the different sections of a song

Music used for this course will consist of a variety of pieces from different styles and eras

 

Piano & Music Theory Basics is a fun entry level adult music class that is perfect for first time beginners or people with some music background looking to firm up their musical foundation. 

 

All students will receive a digital package of sheet music, links to music education resources, and other materials.

This course is open to all musicians and skill levels, and no musical knowledge is required to participate.

Please note that adult classes are non-refundable.

With at least 2 weeks notice of cancelation prior to the start of a course, we will offer credit towards another course.

Playing Piano

Piano & Music Theory Level 2

 

Beginner/Intermediate Level

4 week course

$150

Thursdays 7:30pm May 6th - 27th & June 3rd - 24th

This 4 week adult music class is a continuation of Piano & Music Theory Basics. 

 

In Piano & Music Theory Level 2 you will continue to study music theory concepts and piano technique through learning to play four beginner-intermediate songs in a variety of styles.

 

Some of the topics included are: 

Reading Music - advanced pitch and rhythm 

Chords - 6th, 7th, and more advanced chords

Music Theory Concept - ear training

Advanced Song Form - D.S. al Coda, D.C. al Coda

 

All students will receive a digital package of sheet music, links to music education resources, and other materials.

This course is open to all musicians and skill levels, but is recommended for beginner/intermediate level musicians.

Please note that adult classes are non-refundable.

With at least 2 weeks notice of cancelation prior to the start of a course, we will offer credit towards another course.

Songs Of The 60's & 70's
 
Beginner/Intermediate Level
4 week course
$150

In this adult music class you will explore several classic songs each week by icons of the 60's and 70's like The Beatles, Billy Joel, Elton John, Marvin Gaye, Carole King, The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin and more.

 

The class will greatly increase your understanding of chords, song structure, and how to play more interesting ideas hands together on the piano.

 

It will also give you insight into the musical developments that took place during this incredible time in pop music history.

 

This is the perfect class if you are interested in learning more about how to interpret basic chord charts and sheet music, and how to learn to play basic versions of songs on the piano. 

 

All students will receive a digital package of sheet music, links to music education resources, and other materials.

This course is open to all instruments and skill levels, but primarily uses the piano, and is most appropriate for beginner/intermediate level musicians.

The Music Of:

David Bowie

 

Beginner/Intermediate Level

4 week course

$150

 

Wednesdays 8pm March 3rd - 24th & May 5th - 26th

In this 4 week adult music class you will be given a guided tour of some amazing songs written by rock icon David Bowie. Each week your instructor will give you an overview of the entire song, section by section, and you'll receive sheet music and practice suggestions. Even if you can't learn the song in one week, you'll learn a lot about Bowie's songwriting, and will have all the tools you'll need to learn each song at your own pace after the course is over.

Adult Group Class FAQ

Unsure of your skill level?

Use this guide to help you choose your class.

  • Beginner Classes - good for complete beginners, or people with some skills but in need of a refresher on basics

  • Beginner/Intermediate Classes - good for students who know the notes on the piano, can play at least a few major/minor chords, can read some basic rhythms and pitches on staff for treble and bass clef, and can play one or two basic short pieces hands together

  • Intermediate Classes - good for students who know all major/minor chords, can read basic beginner sheet music confidently, and is comfortable playing in a group setting

ARE YOU OFFERING IN PERSON ADULT MUSIC CLASSES AND LESSONS?

  • Not yet, but we are targeting late spring/early summer 2021 to possibly begin offering in person instruction again. 

 

WHAT DO I NEED TO PARTICIPATE IN AN ADULT MUSIC CLASS?

For virtual lessons or classes you will need:

  • An instrument - For most of our classes piano will work best, but you can use any instrument unless the class is specifically geared towards a specific instrument.

  • A Zoom account and the standalone Zoom app will provide the best experience.

  • For lessons you'll need a camera and mic.

  • For classes, you don't need a camera or mic, but your ability to participate will be limited without them.

DO I HAVE TO KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT MUSIC TO TAKE AN ADULT MUSIC COURSE?

  • Most courses are open to all skill levels, including complete beginners, but some courses list recommended skill levels to help you get the most out of each course. Check the specific course you're interested in for details. Contact us if you're unsure if the class is appropriate for you!

  • Even if you don't know much about a subject, or feel that you're not at the recommended skill level the class, you'll have access to videos and course materials after the course is over, so you'll be able to use the course as a way to get started and work your way up quickly even if you aren't at the listed skill level of the course. 

AM I GOING TO HAVE TO PLAY FOR OTHER PEOPLE IN THE CLASS?

  • No one will be asked to perform or play anything for the group unless they are comfortable doing so! 

WHO TEACHES KEYLAB'S ADULT MUSIC CLASSES?

  • Our teachers are located mostly in NYC, but we also offer virtual lessons with creative, intelligent, and experienced educators from all over the world. 

HOW MUCH TIME SHOULD I SPEND PRACTICING EACH WEEK?  

  • It is completely up to you how much time you spend practicing. Our courses are designed so that you can spend as much or as little time as you want and you will still be able to learn. 

  • This being said, we do recommend that you try to review the materials as best possible each week so that you can get the most out of each class.

 

HOW MUCH DO ADULT MUSIC CLASSES COST?

  • Most of our classes are 4 week courses and cost around $150-200. See details for specific classes for more info. 

DO YOU OFFER REFUNDS FOR COURSES AND CLASSES?

  • We don't offer credits or refunds for missed or cancelled classes.

  • If you give us at least at least 2 weeks notice before the course starts, we'll offer credit for another course or private lessons.

WHY SHOULD I TAKE AN ADULT MUSIC COURSE?

  • Taking an adult music class can be a profoundly rewarding experience. Learning is the foundation of lifelong growth, and you're never too old to start!

  • At around $35 per class it's an affordable way to get on track with your music ambitions right away!

WHAT ARE KEYLAB'S CLASSES LIKE?

  • Keylab's adult music classes are fun and social, and also highly effective!

  • Our adult music classes designed to help you create a strong and solid foundation for playing piano and understanding basic music theory.

  • We use a variety of music from many styles that is fun to play, and we don't use method books. 

  • With some basic foundational knowledge, and the proper guidance on how to use that knowledge, most people can learn to play at least well enough to have fun and enjoy the experience

WHAT IF I MISS MY ADULT MUSIC CLASS?

  • Each class will be filmed, edited and posted to our site for students to access online, so if you can't make a class, you can still go over the material and be ready for the next week's class. 

I DON'T HAVE AN INSTRUMENT. CAN YOU HELP ME BUY ONE?

 

I'M AFRAID I'LL FAIL AT ADULT MUSIC CLASSES

  • There is no failing with our classes, and you don't need talent or a PhD to learn to play piano or other instruments.

  • You won't be asked to perform, and you don't have to play anything to take our adult music classes. 

  • You just have to WANT to learn, and be open to trying something new. Who knows? It might just change your life!
